Xmas in an RV
Thinking of the best Christmas you could imagine, what would it include? Adventure? Family togetherness, beautiful scenery and a sense of freedom? If those are some of the boxes you would check, then spending the holidays with your family in an RV may be the perfect plan.
Many luxury RV resorts are the kinds of places that offer all the amenities you could hope for: spas, saunas, clubhouses with a well-designed schedule of events, and more. For some families these upscale resorts would be the perfect place for holiday vacations.
If luxury isn’t your speed, and you want to spend more time outside enjoying nature, you can pick from so many places to go. The National Parks are amazing as are so many state parks that you can’t even count them all. Pick where you want to be for the best climate you want, and then go from there. If it is south for sunshine and beaches, there are many choice destinations. For the rugged, you could go for northern climates and sun and ski vacations.
For Christmas time, however, here are some great getaway locations to consider for welcoming the holiday season with open arms. In a few short weeks will you be preparing for hot chocolate around the campfire, a Christmas tree in the camper and string lights around the RV to celebrate the most joyous time of the year? Are you looking forward to an epic Christmas at your favorite campground?
We’ve searched the country to find some of the most Christmas-y, cheerful and Santa-filled places that are motorhome approved across the U.S. From towns that are actually called Christmas and Santa Claus, to unique holiday celebrations, you’ll be glad you parked your RV at one of these amazing campgrounds. Get the string lights and mistletoe out; and begin planning a magical Christmas.
Here are our favorite Christmas-y destinations:
Christmas, Florida
Where to Stay: Christmas RV Park
Make your way to the happiest place in Florida, a town that is named for Christmas! This festive town is located merely twenty miles east of Orlando and is en route to Kennedy Space Center, Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, and Canaveral National Seashore. Let us not forget that nearby Kissimmee is home to the “happiest place on earth,” Disney World. While you are there, visit Fort Christmas which is a lovely historic park featuring replicas of historical buildings such as an 1837 fort, pioneer homes & a sugar mill.
Christmas keeps to its namesake with festive decorations throughout the town and events every holiday season. It’s the ideal central location to park your RV and be able to take trips to the desirable surrounding destinations all Christmas season! And, it’s only about a half-hour drive from our Orlando El Monte RV Rentals Location.
Our other Florida choice for great weather during the holiday season is San Carlos RV Resort & Marina
Located in: Fort Myers Beach, Florida
Located on Hurricane Bay, this is a well-rated RV park year-round, but those who've stayed here over Christmas note carolers stopping by their rigs as well as being invited to neighboring campers' holiday parties. Recently, there was a report of a very large, lighted, decorative tree installed in the front of the park, which added to an already festive look for the Christmas season. Other winter amenities include shuffleboard, horseshoes, kayaking trips, live music, and of course, great Florida winter weather.
Stone Mountain Park, Georgia is our third choice for the holiday season and it will not disappoint.
Where to Stay: Stone Mountain Park Campground
Located in: Stone Mountain, Georgia
This area near Atlanta is home to Stone Mountain Christmas, a month-and-a-half-long celebration that includes incredible light displays, festive music, a parade and tree lighting ceremony, scenic train rides, live shows, and plenty more. The nearby RV park offers a "Christmas Camping Package" that includes passes to the festivities, a bundle of firewood, and a s'mores pack.
Stone Mountain Park has over 250 full and partial hook-up campsites, so you won’t have to worry about not having a reservation if you make a last-minute trip to Georgia. Known as “Atlanta’s Most Heartwarming Holiday Celebration,” Christmas lasts from November 10th through January 6th in Stone Mountain! The town is known for its amazing holiday attractions like the Summit Skyride, Scenic Railroad, and The Polar Express 4-D Experience. This is truly a place where children are free to let their Christmas cheer shine and be fully embraced! Come see Santa and a ton of other holiday classic characters while you enjoy the Christmas carols and hot cocoa with your loved ones
Throughout the season, there are opportunities to go water tubing, take holiday train rides, drive or walk through lighting displays, and even meet Rudolph and the Abominable Snowman or check out "Ice Age 4-D" on the big screen. Although you won't likely find snow at this southern destination, you can still get into the Christmas spirit by venturing down Wonderland Walkway, attending the daily Christmas parade, or catching evening firework shows.
Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona
For the more adventurous, if you want to go out west for Christmas, or you live in the west and want to take advantage of smaller crowds, Grand Canyon National Park is free of the warm weather crowds in the winter and Christmas seasons, making this one of the best times to visit this famous landmark attraction. With fewer crowds and cooler temperatures in December, you won’t have to worry about cars clogging the most popular destination or the sweltering heat of Arizona's summers.
RV camping is available year-round at the Trailer Village RV Park, which is located in Grand Canyon Village on the South Rim, with full RV hookups, set within a high-desert landscape. The Grand Canyon Railway, which is also located in the Grand Canyon Village, is a must for anyone visiting the park any time of year, but it gets even better at Christmas when it's temporarily transformed into the Polar Express. And, yes, even with COVID-19, the Polar Express will be running. Visit the website to see restrictions and for reservations, which you should make early this year, especially!
And our fifth choice, but perhaps the top choice for those in the Midwest, is the town of Santa Claus, Indiana.
This town in Indiana has taken the Christmas theme and run with it. You’ll have a blast in Santa Claus, Indiana, with all their holiday-themed attractions such as the Santa Claus Museum, Santa’s Candy Castle, and Frosty’s Fun Center. The town has the unique distinction of having a post office with the name of Santa Claus which is flooded with letters every year addressed to old St. Nick. Of course, you can choose to stay at Lake Rudolph Campground and RV Resort when you're in town, which is also appropriately decorated with holiday cheer throughout the Christmas season.
