Classes of RVs Explained

A recreational vehicle (RV) offers a convenient way to explore and experience different places while enjoying the comforts of home on wheels.

RVs are generally grouped into three main classes based on their size, chassis and features. At El Monte RV, we provide a wide range of rental RVs in these classes to help you meet your travel needs.

What Are the Different Classes of RVs?

Here is a breakdown of the primary classes of RVs.

Class A

Class A RVs are some of the largest motorhomes and are available in diesel or gasoline engine options. They are between 26 and 45 feet long and weigh between 13,000 to 30,000 pounds. This class of RVs offers as many luxuries as an average house — you can find amenities such as king or queen-sized beds, a large interior with reclining chairs and sofas and entertainment centers with large televisions. They also come with a fully equipped kitchen that features a refrigerator, freezer, stovetop, oven and microwave.

These RVs are known for their unmatched cargo capacity as well. The compartment below the camper is reserved for storage and can accommodate a wide range of items like bicycles and sporting equipment. There are several advantages to choosing this type of RV, such as:

  • Lots of storage space.
  • Spacious, luxurious interior.
  • Extra comfort and convenience.
  • Suitable for long-term travel or temporary housing.

Class B

Class B RVs are the smallest drivable motorhomes, and they look like vans. They vary in size but can be 17 to 23 feet long and weigh between 4,000 and 9,000 pounds. Given their compact size, these RVs can sleep two to four people and are ideal for solo travelers or couples looking for a comfortable motorhome with essential amenities. Some of the benefits of Class B RVs include:

Easy maneuverability given their small size.

Better fuel economy than larger RVs.

Wide range of options to choose from.

Great for taking to a variety of destinations.

Comfortable amenities.

Class C

This class of RVs is an intermediate size between Class A and Class B. They are mid-sized RVs, often featuring a raised cab over the driver's area and built on a truck chassis. These RVs are 20 to 30 feet long and weigh 10,000 to 13,000 pounds. Class C RVs provide a number of advantages:

  • They are versatile and can be used for both short trips like weekend getaways and extended trips.
  • Given their intermediate size, they are easy to drive and park in tighter spaces.
  • They have amenities like a sleeping area, living area, bathroom and well-equipped kitchen for comfort.
  • Compared to the larger Class A RVs, they are more fuel-efficient.

In addition to the three main RV classes, there are other types of RVs, such as:

  • Travel trailers: These RVs are towed behind a vehicle using a standard hitch. They come in a wide range of sizes, from small to large.
  • Fifth wheels: Fifth wheels require a truck with a specialized tow hitch to establish a stable connection and better weight distribution.
  • Truck campers: These are RVs that can be carried in the bed of a pickup truck. They are very compact and can be easily removed from the truck.
